When was the last time each MLB team had a player win All-Star MVP?

Although seemingly a frivolous award, the longtime accolade has the fingerprints of some of the game’s greatest legends all over it.

As the calendar is about to flip to September, teams and players around baseball are either focusing in on a push for a playoff spot and end-of-season awards or a final look at some young talent to evaluate for the future with around 25 games left on the schedule.

While the biggest resume boosting accolades are either regular season or postseason awards gifted to players in the fall, one forgotten honor is issued every year in July – and many of the game’s biggest legends have taken home the award at least once.

Although the MLB All-Star Game dates back to 1933, the tradition of handing out an MVP award for the game began in 1962, the final year in which two separate All-Star games were played.

Since then, the honor has been issued in every year with two exceptions – 2002, when the All-Star Game infamously ended in a tie as both teams ran out of pitchers, and 2020, when the entire event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The award is currently decided on an 80-20 scale that favors writers and broadcasters who are covering the game on-site, while 20% of the vote is decided by fans in an online fan vote.

Of the 68 times the award has been issued as of 2026, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame has taken home the honor on 25 occasions, while nine currently active players have won the award at least once in their career.

Although most winners of the award are perennial All-Stars who made several apperances in the Midsummer Classic, the following five players won the award in their only All-Star Game appearance:

2. Bo Jackson, 1989, Kansas City Royals
3. J.D. Drew, 2008, Boston Red Sox
4. Melky Cabrera, 2012, San Francisco Giants
5. Eric Hosmer, 2016, Kansas City Royals

There are currently four franchises that have never had a player win the award as of 2026:

1. Chicago White Sox
2. Detroit Tigers
3. Arizona Diamondbacks
4. St. Louis Cardinals

Although the Nationals have not had a player win the award since moving from Montreal to Washington, D.C. in 2005, an Expos player won the award on three different occasions.
