A full list of the U.S. counties my wife and I have traveled to together

In a continuation of yesterday’s list, here’s a full look at the U.S. counties my wife and I have traveled to together.

As an American, I feel like myself and many others have always viewed domestic and international travel in two distinct lanes.

While domestic travel can range from a weekend road trip to a weeklong honeymoon in Hawaii, international travel has always felt like and been a different ballgame in my mind – which is perhaps partially influenced by the sheer amount of places there are to do and see within the United States.

Of course, most travel within the U.S. is thought of in terms of cities and states, with larger cities and national parks typically serving as the hubs for tourism for domestic travelers. Yet due to my lifelong love of lists and maps, I began to think about travel in a much more boring, monotonous way.

The United States, as Bryant Reeves would certainly tell you, is a big country. While the country’s estimated population of nearly 342 million is only dwarfed by India and China, the U.S. ranks 180th worldwide in population density, at just 96.8 residents per square mile.

The easiest way to truly conceptualize the low population density nationwide is to simply look at a map of American counties with cities of 250,000 people or more highlighted – which makes it quite clear how urbanized the U.S. population is, and how vast swaths of the country are largely devoid of people.

There are currently 3,144 counties and county-equivalents within the 50 states and Washington D.C., the vast majority of which you and I will never step foot in.

With that said, I still thought it would be fun to keep track of the counties my wife and I travel to, crossing off vacation destinations and road trip pit stops on the same playing field while getting to follow just how much of the country we see together within our lifetimes.

This list does not include counties that we simply drive through, with us needing to have stopped at a given location, be that a store, gas station, fast food drive-thru or private residence for it to be included.
