With Opening Day action just hours away, here’s a look at the last time each team in the league won at least 90 games in a season.
Months after the baseball world soaked in one of the most exciting games in the sport’s history in Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, MLB is finally returning this week with the first regular season games of the 2026 season.
Anticipation has run high among baseball fans, who just watched Venezuela defeat the United States to win the 2026 World Baseball Classic while anxiously anticipating the possibility of a lengthy lockout in 2027.
While the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers appear well-suited to be baseball’s best yet again after adding Kyle Tucker to their lineup and Edwin Díaz to their bullpen, there will be plenty of notable competition across both leagues after a rather busy offseason.
Following an insanely disappointing 83-win campaign, the New York Mets moved to add top free agent Bo Bichette while trading for veteran infielder Marcus Semien in a rather major shake-up.
The Boston Red Sox were also among the more active teams this offseason, adding Sonny Gray, Caleb Durbin and Willson Contreras through trades while signing Ranger Suarez to a 5-year deal worth $130 million. The additions come with the very notable subtraction of Alex Bregman, who inked a 5-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs, serving as the North Siders’ grand addition of the offseason.
Other notable offseason moves include the defending AL champion Toronto Blue Jays adding another star pitcher in Dylan Cease to their staff, the Baltimore Orioles looking to move back into contention with the signing of Pete Alonso and the Detroit Tigers fortifying their Tarik Skubal-led rotation with the addition of Framber Valdez.
All of the aforementioned teams are hopeful the offseason moves translate to meaningful success over the course of 162 games, with 90 wins often set as a benchmark for a successful season.
Not only is it essentially a guaranteed playoff berth with the expanded postseason format used by MLB today, it’s also long been the mark of a consistently good team – one that has weathered the ebbs and flows of a long season to remain a constant threat from late March through October.
In 2026, five of the six division winners across the league won at least 90 games in 2025, while three of the league’s Wild Card teams also reached the milestone.
Although 90 wins has equaled a postseason berth since MLB adopted the 12-team playoff format in 2022, it used to be relatively common for 90-win teams in strong divisions and/or leagues to miss out on October baseball – which last occurred to the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners in 2021, winning 91 and 90 games, respectively.
With the 2026 season getting underway Wednesday evening, here’s a look at the last time each team in the league won 90 games in a season:
