While our video game collection primarily centers around physical video games, looking to add a wide range of controllers comes with the territory.
As our video game collection nears 500 physical titles, I started to think of the controllers that are part of our collection and which ones we’d love to add of those we are missing.
The recent interest in controllers has largely been sparked by my two most recent fixations in gaming – the Super Smash Bros. series and rhythm games, primarily Guitar Hero and Rock Band games.
While an in-depth world of pricey controllers for professional players exists for the former, it’s primarily a fast-paced resale market for the latter, with the scarcity of original instrument controllers only increasing as the years go by.
As someone who discarded a few old rhythm game controllers, the quest to get some of them back has been long and often fruitless. Yet after finally adding an Xbox 360 Guitar Hero controller to the library, I thought now would be a great time to see where the collection stands when it comes to unusual controllers designed for specific games.
As we still look to add more to scratch the rhythm game itch, here’s a look at the unconventional controllers currently in our library:
1. NES Zapper – Duck Hunt

2. GameCube bongos – Donkey Konga

3. PlayStation 2 guitar controllers – Guitar Hero (black and white) and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (cherry red and white)

4. Wii and Xbox 360 guitar controllers – Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (X360, black) and Guitar Hero: World Tour (Wii, black/light green)

5. Xbox 360 drums – The Beatles: Rock Band

6. Xbox 360 six-string guitar – Rock Band 3

7. Xbox 360 keyboard – Rock Band 3

8. Xbox 360 turntable – DJ Hero (faulty effects dial)
