With the NHL season still in its Olympics break while several players are on the doorstep of the milestone, here’s a look at some of the recent history of 100 points in a season.
As the hockey world is still locked in on the conclusion of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, the NHL is less than a week away from returning to action, with a thrilling few weeks of regular season play ahead before the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Continuing a trend seen throughout the 2020’s so far, this season has been one with plenty of high-octane offenses, with defense coming at a premium throughout the league as 15 of the NHL’s 32 teams have scored at least 180 goals before hitting the 60-game mark.
This offensive firepower has expectedly translated to individual players having outstanding seasons, with seven players across the league having already compiled 70 or more points this season – not to mention the 90+ already achieved by the likes of Nikita Kucherov, Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.
There will almost certainly be a handful of players to reach the mark this season, with McDavid only one really good game away from achieving the feat as he sits at 96 points at the midseason break.
That will echo what the league has seen in the full seasons that have taken place this decade so far, which have seen a handful of players add their name to the record books each season in this regard. Six players accomplished the feat last season, a drop-off from the nine players who scored 100 points in 2023-24 and the 11 players that reached the mark in 2022-23. The 2021-22 season, the first full NHL season of the decade, also had eight players reach the century-mark.
Prior to the offensive explosion of the 2020’s, the NHL went approximately two decades with 100 points in a season being an exceptionally rare accomplishment, only reached by 1-3 players in a season if at all while defense and goaltending reigned supreme.
That of course greatly differed from the highly offensive play seen throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s, where a combination of the league’s greatest offensive players of all-time and an extreme abundance of penalties made for the highest-scoring conditions the league will likely ever see.
With that said, the achievement is far from a universal experience in the NHL, as the following six franchises have never had a player record 100 points in a season:
- Utah Mammoth
- Seattle Kraken
- Vegas Golden Knights
- Columbus Blue Jackets
- Nashville Predators
- New Jersey Devils
Additionally, the Winnipeg Jets have only had the mark achieved once – by Marian Hossa in 2006-07 when the franchise was based in Georgia and known as the Atlanta Thrashers.
Here’s a look at the last time each team had a player reach triple digits in points for a season, updated through the 2025-26 NHL season:
