Even after several decades of a passing-dominated league, just 12 quarterbacks have ever eclipsed 50,000 passing yards in their careers.
With another week of NFL action almost in the books, I was curious to see what the all-time passing leaderboard looks like a few years after the retirement of Tom Brady, who set a slew of seemingly unbreakable records.
During his illustrious 23-season career that lasted from 2000 to 2022, Brady compiled an insurmountable 89,214 passing yards – nearly 9,000 more yards than the next-closest quarterback in Drew Brees.
While Brady’s lofty record may make it seem like 50,000 passing yards isn’t such a big deal, the milestone remains an incredibly rare one for even longtime, perennial Pro Bowl quarterbacks to reach.
There is perhaps no greater proof of this than the career of current Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback Joe Flacco, who remains just under 2,000 yards short of the 50,000-yard mark, despite having been in the NFL since the 2008 season.
Of course, Flacco’s production has been greatly slowed by injury and much of the past decade spent as a backup quarterback – but even then, it gives a look into the extent of longevity required for a player to throw for 50,000 yards.
Of the 12 quarterbacks to have reached 50,000 passing yards in their careers, five are currently members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame – while the other seven are either currently active or have retired within the past seven years. Only Eli Manning’s case for the Hall of Fame appears to be up for any sort of measurable debate.
With just two active quarterbacks having reached the milestone, here’s a current look at the 12 players to have reached 50,000 passing yards in the NFL:
