Who has hit the most home runs all-time as a switch hitter?

Although the all-time home run leaderboard is dominated by players that only hit from the left or right side of the plate, a small handful of switch hitters have made a name for themselves in the power department.

While watching what ultimately turned out to be a frustrating 6-5 loss for the Chicago Cubs against the Seattle Mariners, I couldn’t help but to think about the 10-year career of longtime Cub Ian Happ after he hit a solo home run in the 8th inning.

Though not at all a perennial MVP candidate or even All-Star, Happ has been one of the most quietly consistent hitters in baseball throughout his career, doing so the whole time as a switch hitter (though his struggles from the right side of the plate have led to a platoon in left field).

It’s no surprise that Happ has already made his way onto several Cubs franchise leaderboards, but his role as a switch hitter in a sport where hitting from both sides of the plate is only getting harder has allowed him to climb a few leaderboards in that category as well.

Happ’s home run on Friday was the 194th of his MLB career, placing him 11th all-time among Cubs players and tied for 35th all-time among switch hitters, with Happ now even alongside Yasmani Grandal.

Although switch hitters make up less than 10% of MLB players, they have made a significant impact throughout the history of baseball – including as power hitters, with two members of the 500 home run club having been switch hitters.

Mickey Mantle still stands alone as the all-time home run leader among switch hitters with 536 long balls throughout his career, while Eddie Murray’s 504 career taters places him second on the switch hitter home run leaderboard.

When it comes to active players, it’s still Carlos Santana who leads the way, with the 40-year-old aiming to catch on with a big league roster for the remainder of the season. Although Santana hasn’t added to his total this season yet, he does have 335 home runs to his name, placing him eighth all-time among switch hitters.

While the vast majority of switch hitters throw right-handed, a small minority have been natural left-handers who adopted the skill to bat right-handed, with Lance Berkman standing out as the most notable slugger in this regard with 366 homers, putting him sixth all-time among switch hitters.
