MLB’s All-Star week is here, and festivities got underway Monday evening with the Home Run Derby, marking the 40th iteration of the annual event that has long been revered for its loose, fun atmosphere and emphasis on what casual fans love most – the home run.

Though it doesn’t have quite the history that the nearly century-old All-Star Game now has, the Home Run Derby is undoubtedly a celebrated occasion in both baseball and the broader sports world, especially as most North American pro sports are at a standstill during the All-Star Break.

While the 2026 Derby introduced a new format to an event that has seen a litany of changes over the years, the appeals to the exhibition remain consistent – fans get to see some of the game’s most feared power hitters duke it out for who can knock it out of the park with the most gusto.

Participation among stars varies from year-to-year, with many star players opting out in past years citing concerns that their swing in second half games could be impacted – though these worries may just all be baloney, especially in a league where uppercut swings are sought after and prioritized by many players.

As of 2026, 22 of the league’s 30 teams have had at least one player win the Home Run Derby, with Jordan Walker becoming the first Cardinal to win the event in franchise history on Monday.

The following eight teams have never had a player win the Home Run Derby since its inception in 1985:
