From unheard of to relatively common, striking out 200 times in a season is now seen as a consequence of both unforgiving pitching and a power-heavy approach.
As much as I lament the game of baseball that I grew up with throughout the 2000’s, it’s also fascinating to see just how much of the game has changed – and what the driving factors behind those changes were.
Perhaps nothing is as stark as the increase in strikeouts over the course of the past 10-15 years, ballooning from 34,306 leaguewide in 2010 to 40,645 last season.
There are several factors behind this shift, most of which revolves around the ridiculous skill today’s pitchers have developed in recent years. Due to a shift towards advanced analytics, pitching staffs are more optimized than ever before, with each team likely to boast a variety of arms that can throw for triple-digit velocity while still offering a repertoire of three or more pitches.
Hitters have responded by adopting a power-heavy approach, emphasizing launch angle above the more horizontal, contact-based swings that were a staple among middle infielders for much of baseball’s history.
The jump in strikeouts leaguewide has expectedly correlated with a massive increase in individual season totals as well, with former righty slugger Mark Reynolds serving as a pioneer of sorts in this space. Reynolds was the first to break the double-century mark in strikeouts in a single season, getting fanned 204 times in 2008, the first of three seasons in which Reynolds struck out 200 or more times.
More notable names have joined the list in the years since, with league MVPs Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton both reaching the dubious milestone during their careers, while MVP finalists Kyle Schwarber and Chris Davis have also broken 200 strikeouts in a single-season.
