The NHL’s equivalent to a Rookie of the Year award, winners over the years have ranged from future Hall of Famers to a few one-season wonders.
The second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs is moving at a brisk speed, with the Carolina Hurricanes having a chance Saturday to become the first team to secure a berth to the conference finals.
Already nearly a month into the postseason, fans of teams no longer in the mix are starting to look ahead to the coming months – which include the 2026 NHL Draft and the awards ceremony recapping the 2025-26 regular season.
With the awards ceremony looming not long after the conclusion of the postseason, finalists for the league’s major awards were announced this week – offering a foreshadowing into the top three vote-getters for each trophy.
While much of the attention around awards season centers around the Hart, Norris and Vezina trophies, fans also often show a good amount of interest in the Calder Memorial Trophy – the league’s equivalent to a rookie of the year award.
With the accolade being an award that can only be won once, most seasons feature riveting races between the top rookies who are all gunning for a lofty honor to begin their career with. This season was not among those seasons however, with New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer widely expected to win the award after a stellar freshman campaign.
Voted on each year by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, the Calder Memorial Trophy was first awarded following the 1936-37 season and is named after the NHL’s first president, Frank Calder – who actually decided the winner of the award in its first year of existence.
Heading into the 2026 awards ceremony, seven of the league’s 32 teams have never had a player win the award:
