Released in 1999, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage still stands out as a quintessential title for the PlayStation and a hallmark of the series. Here’s a look at which levels made the game so great.
Long regarded as a standout platformer of the era and a must-have game for the PlayStation, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage elevated the series to new heights, expanding on an already acclaimed first title with new abilities, more expansive levels and a different premise.
Initially playing the game for the first time myself in 2003, I just recently finished a 100% completion of the game on PlayStation, in addition to a complete run on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy version a few years ago.
At least personally a marked improvement over an already stellar first game of the series in Spyro the Dragon, Ripto’s Rage features plenty of notable quality-of-life improvements. From the addition of swimming, ladder-climbing and head-bashing to the removal of enemies in homeworlds, the series’ second game is both easier and more relaxing to navigate.
Many of these levels made Ripto’s Rage one of the most played games of my childhood, and one I always have fun revisiting, whether it be the original version or excellent remaster with the Reignited Trilogy.
In the fourth tier list on The Rubber Match, I went through each level, homeworld and boss battle in Ripto’s Rage, tiering the stages on which ones stand out as levels I enjoy playing through when revisiting the game. I also aimed to consider the creativity and contributions to the series behind each level, while also factoring in characteristics that may make a level more tedious or frustrating than another.
Below is a video of me walking through my tier list of Ripto’s Rage levels, with an image of the completed tier list afterwards.
